Here is a rather hastily written list of recent listening on CD's, which I think of like reproductions of paintings- as opposed to seeing the real thing. The one live concert was at the Royal Festival Hall on the 10th May of Mozart, a completely different experience with a choir of 150! I listen to music because it differs so completely, as an experience,- to painting. James Joyce in 'Ulysses' (p45) uses two German words to make the point in the part where Stephen begins- "The ineluctable modality of the visible"…

PAINTING

Mute-exists in space
Synchronic
Still
NEBENEINANDER
Cezanne, Giotto, Matisse etc etc

MUSIC

With Poetry, writing, film etc
exists in time
Diachronic
NACHEINANDER
Narrative- sequential
Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Vivaldi etc etc

-but read Joyce- he can write,
I can't!
